We will pass these along to Claris. Marty, I've run into a couple of what I =think= are reproducible bugs (at least I can get them to hang my system again, and again). 1) When printing the Form Definition screen to the printer when using the Database, the screen prints okay, but the system hangs after the printing is done and the "printing in progress..." message disappears. As I move the "watch" cursor about the screen, beautiful multi-colored squares are left behind. Running under GS/OS, Control-Reset gets me out okay, and after re-launching AWkGS, the DB file I was working with will be as last saved. 2) In Page Layout, 3 columns, L&R Master Pages, when trying to add "(...Continued from page 1)" to the top of column 1 on page 2, I could cause the system to consistently hang under these circumstances: I had imported six linked columns of text using the font Flash.9. I would insert a line at the top of column 1, page 2, then choose "centered," NewYork.9, OA-I, OA-B. As soon as I would type a left parenthesis, the program would hang. Under GS/OS, Control-Reset would get me out, and the file I was working with would be as last saved. The system hung four times in a row using the previous steps -- with no error messages, it would just hang. The 5th & 6th time, I got two error messages (something like "can't import more than 2500 paragraphs" and "not enough memory to edit"). The 7th time, the system crashed into the low-res text screen. I was able to insert the text in the style I wanted by typing my line in the current font, then highlighting the text, doing OA-B and OA-I, and lastly choosing NewYork.9. I am sending a disk with the buggy file and the finished file to CLARIS tech support at their request. The system I was using when experiencing the above problems: IIgs, 1.25 megs of dedicated system RAM (Apple card), 1.5 megs of battery backed up RAM (/AEROM) with all system files there, Apple 20SC HD (two 10 meg partitions) and an Apple SCSI card (Rev. C ROM) in S7, 1 meg Apple slinky in S6, Apple 3.5" drive from the smart port, Mitsuba Super Modem 2400 from the modem port, and an ImageWriter II from the printer port. (Anyone know where I can get a fully populated GS-RAM plus dirt cheap? :) CLARIS, by the way, has been super. Their support people are courteous, my upgrades and updates for AWks and AWksGS have always arrived much sooner than I was told to expect, and their Tech Support people have been helpful. For a program as huge and powerful as AWksGS, I think it's remarkably bug free. Subj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-15 22:59:40 est From: DHR I have the new Appleworks GS and must say I'm not very impressed with it so far. I only have one 3.5 disk drive and disk switching is really a pain. I do have two Disk II drives attached to a controller card in slot 6. Even though my Disk IIs are empty, every time Appleworks GS needs to access a disk drive it cycles thru my three drives as many as three to four times before stopping and prompting me to insert the program or system disk. This cycling is really time consuming not to mention aggravating. Does anyone know why this happens and how to solve the problem short of disconnecting the Disk IIs? I have 1.25 meg. of ram with a GS-RAM card, a Datalink 2400 modem and an Imagewriter II printer. Subj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-15 23:49:20 est From: GS Samuel You can go to the control panel and set slot six to "your card" (even) though you don't have a card in slot six. Then GS/OS won't poll your 5.25 drives. You'll have to restart your GS after setting the control panel. After you're through with AWksGS, set slot 6 back to port and restart (if you are going to use the 5.25's). Another solution would be to put data disks in the 5.25's to save AWks GS files. (Then when GS/OS polls the drives, they won't clatter.) Subj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-16 23:52:36 est From: AFL Grafix Sam's suggestion of setting the control panel to YOUR CARD for slot 6 is what I use routinely, since I'm sick and tired of having GS/OS poll my 5.25 drives every time at bootup. It has the additional benefit of bypassing the 5.25's within AWGS, too :) MarianSubj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-17 01:09:45 est From: AFA Kathy Resetting the control panel for 5 1/4"s -- I would do that too except my husband refuses to learn how to use the control panel and I keep forgetting to set it back.... :( Also, the polling of the disk drives is a function of GSOS, not AppleWorks GS, something implied by the last couple of messages but not explicitly stated. Kathy Subj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-17 05:17:23 est From: AFL Oli I'm still learning about GS/OS, but let me ask... Can you drag the 5.25 icon to the trash, and stop the polling that way? I can't get thru to Claris tech. supp., so I'm leaving my complaint here. When I try to load a filetype $C0,Auxtype 2 (such as are downloaded here) into the module, it only loads HALF of the picture!! The left half.. what am I doing wrong? I have 1.5mb of ram, using a hard disk, 1 3.5, 1 5.25, andan ImageWriter II. (But I dobuy any of those would affect this, right?) Later Subj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-17 20:05:14 est From: AFL Floyd Oli, Removing the 5.25 driver from your DRIVERS directory will disable the 5.25" drives under GS/OS. I don't use the 5.25" drive under GS/OS, so I never installed the driver. This will stop the polling of the 5.25" drives from *all* GS/OS applications, including the Finder. FloydSubj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-17 20:10:08 est From: AFL Oli Thanks, Floyd. I find this works EXTREMELY well for me. What I have is Prosel (a program selector) installed on my "always on" IIgs (AE Ramkeeper w/2.5 megs). I run predominantly 8 bit programs from my romdisk. When I want to run a 16 bit program, I start the finder (also on romdisk) and launch the application. When I quit finder, I always quit back to the launching application (Prosel, of course) From Prosel and the 8 bit world, I can access the 5.25 drives whenever I want. In the finder, I don't have the 5.25 driver installed, so it is as if they don't even exist. The best of both worlds, I should think. Works like a charm for me, anyway...Subj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-17 20:35:38 est From: TimothyF1 This is possibly not a "bug" so-to-speak, but I would appreciate help. I tried to load a 47K Appleworks spreadsheet, and after several minutes I received a message that there was not enough memory to load the file into AWGS. I am using two 3 1/5" drives and a full Apple Memory Expansion Card. Any ideas? By the way, how can I increase the memory in my IIGS without going to a hard drive? Thanks!!Subj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-17 21:06:47 est From: AFL Grafix I, too, have noticed the problem with loading $C0 Apple Preferred (Auxtype $0002) graphics and getting only the left half of the picture. At least one other person has noted it, too, and he reported it to Claris about a week ago and I suspect they are working on it. Meanwhile, you can use SHRConvert to convert those pics to $C1 or $C0 Auxtype $0000 (Paintworks format) and THEN they will load into AWGS just fine. MarianSubj: Expanding memory 88-11-17 21:07:48 est From: AFL Grafix Tim, You can use either Checkmate's Memory Saver or Applied Engineering's Ramkeeper to plug more than one memory card into your GS. This will increase the actual RAM of your GS, unlike a hard drive, which will increase disk storage and access time reading and writing files to disk. You can allocate some of this extra RAM to a RAM disk or to a "ROM" disk--which is actually an non-volatile (battery backed up) RAM disk. This is the only way in which additional RAM can be made to behave sort of like a hard disk; otherwise RAM and a hard disk serve two different purposes. Make sense? MarianSubj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-18 00:10:21 est From: JIB2 Although my copy of AWGS hasn't arrived yet (any day...), another way to stop 5.25 drives from being polled under GS/OS is to select the 5.25 Driver icon in the drivers folder in the system folder (not the drive icon on the desktop) from the Finder and invoke Get Info from the File menu (either by command or OA-I). Then check the box marked inactive -- it will cause the system to ignore the driver after the next reboot. This works for desk accessories and drivers. I prefer this over removing the driver from the folder -- its always in the right place, I just have to turn it back on and reboot if I need to use a 5.25 disk from GS/OS. Jim BlockSubj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-18 20:17:58 est From: AFL Marty Timothy - going to a hard drive will not increase the memory of your GS. To add memory beyond 1.25 meg, however, you will need something beyond just Apple's Extended Memory Card. You can get a GS RAM card from AE, but that just expands total memory to 1.5 meg, or you can get RAMKEEPER (from AE) or MEMORY SAVER (from Checkmate) and piggy-back two memory cards... I don't have any of these, so someone else will have to advise you on the merits/drawbacks of each. Also, others should be able to tell you WHICH memory cards can be piggy-backed together using each of the above (Ramkeeper or Memory Saver) MarianSubj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-18 22:15:57 est From: MUS1 Ok, Last nite I was thinking about it and I figured it had something to do with that AWGS is in 640 mode and the pics I was trying to load were in 320. When I get a 640 $C0 $0002 from SHRConvert that was a Mac file, it works fine. One thing to note here... The PL module WILL load the $C0 pics, but it compresses them for some reason.. I was using the AWGS database last night and I imported a standard AppleWorks database; so far so good. I had a lot of fun adjusting the column widths and changing the color and style of the text. When I went to produce a report, everything seemed to work fine except that the word processor file produced didn't have any text in it. It didn't have a slide bar for scrolling either. So, I discarded that report and tried it again. This time I got words on the screen, but I couldn't see all of them. I used the scroll bar (I had one this time) to scroll the text, but my text disappeared. Don't ask me why, but I decided to bring the scroll bar all the way to the bottom. After a few seconds I got the all-too-familiar (to me anyway) message "A Serious System Error Has Occurred". What makes me laugh is the choices you are given when that message appears. They are "Resume" and "Reboot". The effects of Reboot are obvious -- you lose the work you've done since the last time you saved. They really should re-label the Resume button to read "Drop Into the Monitor and then Reboot". :)Subj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-19 21:49:51 est From: GS Bob I think I've got one. I've got 2.75 meg with a ramkeeper and one 3.5 drive. My ROM disk is called AWGS.System. When I use the spell checker it tells me to put in the the disk named "/". I don't have a disk named "/". Anybody else seen this? I like the program so far. The database seems to cause the most trouble. Also the comm program, if you set duplex to HALF, it will NOT take effect until you do so in your initilization string, you need to change that to half duplex also (its a & command). The graphics module is nice, but i wish it'd load the file all the way. ;) Finally, a suggestion : Make more than MONACO and SHASTON available in the comm area!Subj: A Serious System Error Has.... 88-11-21 19:49:22 est From: HErwin This message is showing up with some frequency for users in the Washington DC area. Harry ErwinSubj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-21 19:53:16 est From: HErwin I have had the same problem. "/" is really the program disk. I, too, have had trouble loading large AW databases. I elected to try printing a report. Once I did, I had a nice looking word processor document with the insert cursor at the bottom. When I pressed return to add another blank line at the bottom, the entire document moved down (including the ruler at the top)! So now I have some white space, the ruler, and then some more white space and my text. If I scroll so that the ruler is no longer visible, when I scroll back to the top the ruler disappears completely. I can get it back if I select Hide Ruler and then Show Ruler.Subj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-21 22:07:55 est From: AFL Oli Marty, while the report system from the AWGS database module may be quite inspired in design, apparently the implementation leaves something to be desired. First, while using the paint program, there seems to be a problem with filling anything that was painted with the paint brush. The fill never completely fills the inside graphic. It sort of leaves a small, but noticeable white ring around the border. Second, while in the words processing program, everytime I load the dictionary, it asks me to load the disk with "/" on it (and that's all it says). This is presented in a dialogue box with the choices "ok" or "cancel". If I cancel the spell checker goes to work. If I hit ok, I am presented with the same message. Has anyone had these problems?Subj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-24 05:59:24 est From: AFL Oli While I don't know about the pain ... oops I mean paint program, I think the "/" disk is really the program disk. While I applaud Claris and Styleware for tackling such a huge task, and providing a large number of features, overall I am disappointed with the instability of the program. Within the first 15 minutes of playing, I was able to get "A serious system error as occured" twice doing different things in the spreadsheet module. The first time, the mouse worked, but neither button did anything; the 2nd time, even the mouse wouldn't move. During the next 2 hours of playing with the different modules, I crashed 2 more times and found several other "anomolies." As a programmer by profession, I feel that any software which can be crashed this easily needs at least another 2 months of beta testing before general release. I have always prefered to be late and stable than early and buggy (early and stable does not exist in this industry). While Claris was obviously under tremendous pressure to ship AWGS, I feel that the number of bugs will hurt the product's reputation. People are more likely to remember the bugs that bit them than the fact that they had to wait an extra few weeks to get their copy. I hope that Claris is hard at work trying to fix these bugs and will mail a 1.1 upgrade to all registered users quickly. Subj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-24 21:50:48 est From: AFL Oli Bruce... I suspect the Christmas shopping season may have had something to do with it, as well... Subj: Trashed log files/ long files?? 88-11-24 22:53:57 est From: AFL Grafix Has anyone noticed trashing of long files (particularly log files from AppleLink), when doing mulitple deletes, copy and paste and/or cut and past operations on these files in the WP module? I seem to be the only person reporting having problems in this regard--problem usually shows up as either a trashed file or a bomb box (serious system error) while scrolling through a document I have made these multiple changes in--if I saved the document immediately before the bomb box appears, the trashing of the file appears to get saved, too, at the location where the bomb box showed up. I am particularly interested in the question of whether this is related to file length or to the presence, perhaps, of invisible control characters in ALink log files. At the moment, I seem to be the only one reporting such problems and I'm curious to see if anyone else is encountering them, too. MarianSubj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-25 02:34:44 est From: GS Samuel An update on a "bug" I had reported earlier: When trying to print the data base "Definition" screen, AWGS would consistently lock up on me. The first time I called CLARIS, the customer support person was unaware of the problem, but when I called the next day, it was suggested that I might be running up against memory restrictions. After inactivating the only two DA's I was using (Disk Cache NDA and David Hill's Alarm Clock/Screen Saver CDA), I no longer experienced the lock up. I forget who told us here that when you select a DA file on the Finder Desktop, and then Get Info (OA-I), you will see a box to check beside the word "Inactive." If you check that box, the next time you boot GS/OS, that DA won't be loaded into memory. I'm guessing there might be a few more little secrets about the Finder hidden from those of us who don't own the user manual. I'm guessing that with (only) 1.25 megs reserved for system use, I'd probably run into memory problems if I tried to keep a full 14 documents opened at once, especially if those documents were from diferent modules. I'm also guessing that If I had a couple of more megs of RAM available for system use, I'd be even less apt to run into problems. This is probably the wrong folder to ask for this advice, but here goes, anyway: I have a RamKeeper with a 1 meg Apple card and a 1.5 meg AE GS-RAM installed (1.5 megs for /AEROM, leaving a total of 1.25 megs for system RAM). If you were me, and had relatively limited financial resources for GS enchancements, would you go for (1) a 2 meg AE GS-RAM expander, (2) try to sell the Apple card and replace it with a 3 meg GS-RAM plus, or (3) try to sell the AE GS-RAM, and replace it with a 3 meg GS-RAM Plus? BTW, for those of you who've gotten the latest APDA Log Update, I thought $13 bucks to become a full fledged member of Tech Alliance through December of '89, a free subscription to Call-A.P.P.L.E., and having Apple Inc honor your membership in APDA till it expires was pretty decent. I just hope when my APDA membership expires, Apple will let me renew without my having to qualify as a certified or registered developer.Subj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-25 18:34:02 est From: AFL Marty I was using the graphics module today and I tried to import a type $C0 picture. What I got for my efforts was a bomb box WITHOUT ANY TEXT IN IT! That's right. No text... just two unlabeled buttons with the rest of the screen blank. I picked one at random (flipped a coin, actually) and promptly dropped into the monitor. This really isn't the topic for this, but since I =am= the topic police, I think I can make an exception :) Personally, I agree with Bruce. I am beginning to greatly dislike working with AppleWorks GS. I have encountered a great many bugs just doing simple things. I am rapidly reaching the point where I must psyche myself up just to use the product. I would much rather have waited another 6 months for a product that was more fully tested.Subj: Re: AppleWorks GS Bug Reports 88-11-25 23:10:23 est From: DHR I have never been so disgusted with a program. I find it cumbersome to use and full of bugs. I've spent hours trying to make a mailing label template for a databse file that I created in Appleworks 2.0. I think I've followed the directions in the manual to the letter, but haven't had any success. When I tried to add to the file it locked up on me. Once you start printing a document there seems to be no way to stop printing, short of rebooting. The scrolling text in the Communications module is difficult to read. I hope Claris is taking notes on all of these problems and does something about them. This will be the last time I buy software that has just been released. I'll wait for later versions next time.
