NEW FEATURES IN JUMPSTART VERSION 3.0 A short revision history since Version 2.4: Version 2.5 Corrected address and telephone number Version 2.6 Various improvements Version 2.7 Bug fixes Version 2.8, 2.9 Skipped Version 3.0 Improved disk copying The JumpStart upgrade policy is simple and, I believe, fair. If you get the program from somebody else (an online service, user group, friend) and are a registered JumpStart owner, then you know about getting rid of the "beg-for- money" screen, and the upgrade is free. If you get the upgrade from me, then I ask for $10 to cover the cost of the diskette, mailing, and my time. If you are updating from an earlier version of JumpStart, your JumpStart.Data file will be compatible with Version 3.0. Simply replace */System/Start with this new version. If you have just one screen page in your Run List, you will not have a JumpStart.Data file. To save your current Run List, force a second screen page by installing another entry on the second page; you will now have a data file to preserve your Run List. After installing Version 3.0, simply delete the dummy entry. Several features have been added or modified. Full details will be found in the documentation, which now includes a table of contents and an index. 1. Utilities now include the ability to activate and deactivate CDAs, NDAs, Inits, etc. 2. A Verify File function has been added, to check a file for readability. 3. I wanted to add an Un-Delete function, but was discouraged by Apple's Developer Technical Services, who maintain that GS/OS would make such a utility return errors which would necessitate re-booting. ProDOS-8 is a better platform for such a utility. 4. The Utilities screen has been re-arranged to accommodate new functions. Lock and Unlock have been combined into one control, and the Open and Close Folder buttons are on the same line and half the previous size. 5. The Open-Apple over-ride when booting now works both ways: a) When JumpStart is set to boot an alternate program, you can over- ride this function by holding down the Open-Apple key to go right into JumpStart. b) -- NEW -- When an alternate program is selected but the option to boot into it is not selected (checkbox on Preferences screen), you can boot into your alternate program instead of JumpStart by holding down the Open-Apple key when booting. This is really a lot simpler than it sounds! Stated differently, Preferences chooses whether you boot into JumpStart or into an alternate program. Open- Apple over-rides and reverses that choice. 6. All utilities now operate on directories in the batch process mode. For example, all files in a directory (including files in sub-directories) can be locked by selecting that directory from the batch process catalog list. When deleting or copying over files, confirmation of directory processing is included for safety's sake. This over-rides the Confirm Batch Copy/Delete radio button setting. 7. GS/OS files with resource forks are now copied correctly. 8. Read a Text File has been fixed to read files larger than 128K, as long as there's room available from QuickDraw II. 9. Print a Text File will handle any size file. 10. Expanded the copy routine to do mass production with no further prompting. 11. Significant speed improvement to disk copy from 7.5 minutes down to 75 seconds, on a par with Finder and Photonix. 12. Fixed Visit Monitor/Memory Peeker install option to work properly with ROM 02. 13. Fixed the "confetti" in the opening splash screen (sort of). 14. Changed my address and telephone number (very important to the success of a shareware product). I hope you enjoy the new features of Version 3.0. I am now open to suggestions for Version 3.1!
