____________________________________________________________________________ ANGEL NOTES Tony Marques ____________________________________________________________________________ Gee, it's April 1st, and I was actually considering sending this out without any documentation... Well, with seconds to go before this thing is archived and sent out to adoring masses, I've gotten soft so here are a few notes. ____________________________________________________________________________ Well, consider this release a BETA. Hopefully there are no bugs . But whatever the case I would like to make another release in a month or two. I should be able to update the other two video drivers to reflect recent changes which caused me to exclude them and the GIF and MACpaint picture viewers. Then, if I manage to fix all the memory problems, I'll release the complete ARMOR, and perhaps AGATE will be ready by the year 2000 . The last release of AGATE was AGATE o69 in March 1990, but you may have seen AGATE o6A which was a minor release a couple months later. My track record, such as it is, is pretty bad. I would like to apologize to those people who cared enough to send me contributions or just write. I'm sorry but not only did I not make another release of AGATE, I did not cash any of your cheques. Perhaps next time I will. Until then, this release of ANGEL is for you, and I would like to thank you all very much -- wait, this release minus any bugs is for you. (please no bugs). ____________________________________________________________________________ REQUIREMENTS ANGEL requires an enhanced, 65c02 equiped, Apple IIe, IIc, or IIgs computer with only 128k. Multiple drives are not required, but I recommend that you use them if you have them. ANGEL constanly accesses itself, and you should place it on fixed disk drive like a /RAM disk or a hard drive so that it is always on-line and you avoid a great deal of disk swapping. ____________________________________________________________________________ THE NOTES PIZZA -- Supports ALL PKZIP compression methods including DEFLATED from PKZIP v2.04 (SHRUNK, REDUCED, IMPLODED, and DEFLATED). LHA2a -- Supports both new -lh5- and old -lh1- compression methods. ARC2a -- Supports PACKED, SQUEEZED, NEW CRUNCHED, and SQUASHED, but not OLD CRUNCHED (I've never encountered it). ZOO2a -- Supports ZOO v2.10's new compression and LZW from original. UNIX .Z -- Supports upto 13 bits. When COMPRESSING to transfer to an Apple II, use the -b12 or -b13 parameter to limit the bits. To VIEW compressed UNIX COMPRESS data, hold down the OPEN APPLE when you press the RTN key. SHKiN -- Sorry, I've always used Shrinkit and this is quite lacking. VIEW ARC -- Pressing the OPEN APPLE key bypasses the wait for key each full screen. TEXIS -- TAB key changes the TAB distance. TAB Values are 1, 2, 4, 8. Well, that's all I can think of off hand. ____________________________________________________________________________ CRC CALCULATION -- (feel free to ignore this stuff, I do) When extracting or viewing a file a CRC calculation is also performed. The result is the 8 digit hexidecimal value printed above 'done'. CRC16 values end in FFFF and the first four digits are the CRC value. CRC32 values are the full 8 digits and the last four digits are used to represent the entire CRC value. The CRC16 or CRC32 values should match those in the archive file directories. Only PKZIP uses CRC32 as a CRC while all other archivers use a CRC16. The 'K' command in file directories calculates a CRC16 or CRC32 value for the selected file. It waits for a key press and depending on if the key is even or odd, a CRC16 (even: SPC, '2', '4', 'B', 'D'...) or a CRC32 calc is performed (odd: '1', '3', 'A', 'C', 'K'...) on the entire file. ____________________________________________________________________________ Here are benchmarks involving UNZIP IIE, ANGEL o81 (with and without a CRC calculation), AGATE o69, and SHKiT v3.4; performed on 1.0 mhz Apple IIc in a large /RAM disk. The file was a 127148 byte text file. . .cize. ....compresssion... crc . UNZIP . ANGEL+CRC AGATE . SHKiT . | 52150 41% PKZIP, IMPLODED 32 | 204s | 27* 33s 57* | --- | | 54818 43% PKZIP, SHRUNK 32 | --- | 36* 41s 47* | --- | | 70092 55% SHRINKIT, LZW/1 16 | --- | 38* 41s --- | 48s | | 127148 --- PKZIP, STORED 32 | 53s | 9* 16s 19* | --- | | 127148 --- SHKIT, STORED 16 | --- | 9* 13s --- | 9* | *: No CRC calculation. Shockingly, SHKiT doesn't verify stored files! ____________________________________________________________________________ LEGALITIES ANGEL and all it's parts are copyright 1993 by Tony Marques, and is released to be freely transfered and copied for the purpose of FREE distribution.
