FIRST brought to the attention of CSA2 users - with a post from Bev (of Texas II) mentioned that Deja II was in the process of being reclassified as a freeware title, if my memory serves me correctly, I think her post was around the first or second week of this past October. So, today (11/22/99) while browsing the messageboard of the A2 Delphi forum (as a guest of course :) I noted this post from Howard Katz (who may post to this CSA2 newsgroup on occasion whom some CSA2 users feel may user -aka- Penman). Howard's quoted post is noted below for the general info of this newsgroup. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I'm please to announce the Lost Classics Project has now secured the reclassification of Deja II. Deja II Allows a Macintosh user running at least OS7 to run their persnal copy of AppleWorks 5 on their Mac, using most of the Mac's features includig the hard drive. Most of the users favorite TimeOut applications and UltraMicros will also work within the DejaII shell. Please remember this is a Macintosh program, and it does NOT supply AppleWorks 5 - the user must supply that in order for this program to work. DejaII has been reclassified with the premission of the authors, Randy Brant and Mark Munz, and will be available for downlading as soon as it's been reviewed and released by the librarian. The program will also be available for download from the trenco ftp site." --------------------------------------------------------------------------- For the readers general information the authors website page for Deja II information follows: http://www.jemsoftware.com/mac/ This webpage gives a good outline of what Deja II is all about, for the visitor to read and review. Their ftp site has made the following Mac archive available for public access and download dated from October 7th. ftp://ftp.jemsoftware.com//pub/D2.hqx For those wishing to access by IP number, I've referenced and noted the ftp site IP number: 206.117.150.32 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gee, I finally made it as #1 with something at last :) Relating to the Ref. from the above ftp site when I accessed it and downloaded the D2.hqx archive, see the message I got notice of below :) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 230-Welcome to JEM Software's FTP server. You are user #1 out of unlimited allowed. 230 Anonymous access granted, restrictions apply. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I downloaded the above noted "D2.hqx" archive and found it unstuffed to a Disk Copy v4.2 image file, which I instructed the Disk Copy v4.2 to copy to a Mac 1.4MB - 3.5" disk. It did and the disk was indeed the Deja ][ disk containing the program v1.0.2, with docs and other info files f or understanding the use and installation of the Deja ][ Mac application with all of it's bundled files for use with it. The documentation text file was on the disk and is presented below for your information also. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Deja ][ª by Mark Munz & Randy Brandt Copyright 1995 Mark Munz A Puppy Dog Production published by JEM Software Welcome Welcome to AppleWorks 5 for MacOS! Before long, you'll be using your favorite AppleWorks templates and running your favorite macros on your Macintosh or clone. But first, there are a few things you should note. Version 1.0.2 Change This update modified Deja ][ so that JEM Software's Online Army Knifeª real-time spell checking and auto-correcting would work in AppleWorks. Version 1.0.1 Changes This update fixes several problems that customers have found since the release of Deja ][ 1.0. Changes include: ¥ÊTask files are now properly saved so that Ultra Options can recognize them. ¥ÊThe Enter key is now properly supported, so spreadsheet users can enable that feature. ¥ÊA Power Computing font conflict with the Apple font was fixed. ¥ÊDatabase formulas now support division correctly. The last problem was actually a bug in AppleWorks itself since v4.0, but due to an odd quirk, the DB returned the correct answer on Apple II's in all cases except when a divide by zero was attempted. Power Macintosh Users Deja ][ has been recompiled with improved scheduling. What does that mean? It means that if you are running a Power Mac, the performance should be slightly improved over v1.0. On our Speed Test macro, Deja ][ 1.0.1 was 15% faster in some CPU intensive areas (such as find & replace), and that was on the same PPC 601 that Mark has been using all along. PPC 604 machines should see a slightly better performance. Legal Stuff AppleWorks is a registered trademark of Apple Computer, Inc. licensed to Quality Computers, Inc. Claris is a trademark of Claris Corporation. Lots of other things are trademarks of somebody or other, and/or copyrighted by somebody or other. Microsoft, Inc. plays absolutely no role in any of this. Thanks and Credits Thanks to everyone who supported this effort by purchasing pre-release copies. Thanks also go to Dr. Warren Williams at NAUG for publicity, and to Ross Lambert and Jay Curtis for enthusiastic support for the whole crazed concept. Special thanks to these especially hyperactive testers: Robert Boucher, Wally Bradford, Chris Budewig, Doug Corey, Ken Henke, Scott Shapiro, and last, but certainly not least, James Stevenson. Deja ][ was developed using C++ under the Metrowerks CodeWarrior environment. The new Mac dot commands were written using Merlin-Pro on the IIgs. This project could not have been completed without a few hundred America Online flash sessions. Getting Started Before you do anything else, send an Email note to rbJEM@aol.com to let us know you have an online account (unless of course you ordered via email). This will let us keep you informed of any updates. We hope to make ongoing performance improvements in Deja ][. This is supposed to be a "living" product, not a "one-shot" deal, as we've shown by releasing v1.0.1. Now to work... Drag the Apple II Keyboard file on to your System Folder. It will be stored in the System file for use by Deja ][, allowing keystrokes and macros to function just as if you were running AppleWorks 5 on a IIgs. Drag the AppleWorks folder to your hard drive. This folder contains the Deja ][ application and the AppleWorks 5.1 update files. You'll need a few AppleWorks 5.0 files before you can run AppleWorks. You can copy directly from the AppleWorks 5 ProDOS disks with System 7.5, PC Exchange, or Apple File Exchange. Copy SEG.IM, SEG.EL, and SEG.SN from your AppleWorks 5 startup disk to the AppleWorks folder before you attempt to run Deja ][! If you want to use the spelling checker, copy the main and custom dictionary files as well. Open the AppleWorks folder and double-click the Deja ][ application to get up and running. The documentation is found in the "Deja.Docs" word processor file in the default directory, so just use Add files to load it. Additional macro files are stored in the AW.FILES directory inside of the AppleWorks folder. Have fun! Survey We'd like to find out if there's interest in an MS-DOS or Windows version of Deja ][. Due to the hardware design of IBM-compatibles, it would likely be faster than the Mac version running on comparable hardware. If you'd be a potential customer, or know of someone who would, please let us know. Thanks. Tip We recommend that you create an alias of the application and add it to the Apple Menu Items folder in the System Folder. That way, you can run AppleWorks at any time by selecting it from the Apple menu. AppleWorks 5.1 for the Apple II To create an AppleWorks 5.1 program disk for the Apple II, simple use System 7.5, PC Exchange or Apple File Exchange to copy the files from the AppleWorks folder to a copy of your AppleWorks 5.0 program disk. Copy the TIMEOUT and AW.INITS files to their folders as well, but do not copy SEG.ER, or the files stored in AW.Files. RFP Note The RFP program for AppleWorks 5.1 is also included with Deja ][, but it only runs under Basic on an Apple II, not on the Mac. It's included in case you still have access to an Apple II. ____________________________________ Outdated URL ref. info was [sniped] ____________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ As I've noted above in this post - the current website URL for Jem Software's Mac software titles page is: http://www.jemsoftware.com/mac/ Anyway, observing that it's now available from the above authors ftp site for public access and download...I'd conclude that when this Mac archive becomes available for public access and download from the trenco ftp site, it would also be proper and legal to make it available from other Apple2 ftp sites as well. By all means, I urge anybody that downloads the A2.hqx archive and uses Deja ][ - to send an email to the authors of the program, thanking them for creating it, undating it, maintaining it and most of all -for making it available for public access, download and use. I've had Deja ][ for some time now, having inherited it on a Mac hard drive I obtained last year. It's an amazing and very user friendly AppleWorks emulator program for the Mac (with a really cool Mac sound file included for you to listen too) and I think everybody that has a Mac and enjoyed using AppleWorks will really find it a useful addition for their Mac. Looking forward to some feedback on this post from everybody interested. Cheers, Tom
