Yes; USB is a fast bus and ADB is pretty slow. As you mention, some stuff being designed for a USB connection would choke ADB. USB peripherals which duplicate the function of current ADB peripherals could be interfaced to ADB without much hassle. The IC's seem to be fairly cheap; so, an interface to handle USB-->ADB translation could be of interest just as a way to access new replacements for KB's, mouses, etc.. Still, the main interest in USB is USB-->Apple2-- i.e. directly, rather than USB-->ADB-->Apple2. Going with USB could significantly reduce the cost of producing a high-quality expansion for the IIgs.
