Is such a thing possible to do? > .... A self-extracting v1.1 GS-ShrinkIt ("ShrinkIt GS", "GSHK", etc.) is available on various archive sites including Ground. Look for the file gshk.sea on Ground at ... ftp://ground.ecn.uiowa.edu/apple2/useful.stuff/ . The usual snag with using an .sea file you download and transfer to your IIgs is that it arrives as a type TXT file. So, the user will need to change the filetype to $B3 (S16) in order to execute the file and obtain GS-ShrinkIt. As mentioned in the FAQs, there are many utilities which will let the user change ProDOS filetype. In case a user has none of these, he/she can get Type Changer from Ground (named "tchange" in the same useful.stuff folder as above) or another site and follow the directions in tchange.info.txt to get gshk.sea going. Beverly's discovery of a self-extracting 8-bit ShrinkIt which does not require any messing with filetypes offers the chance to significantly simplify things. For example, GS-ShrinkIt could be placed in a shrinked whole-disk archive (.sdk) file. 8-bit ShrinkIt can unshrink this kind of archive with no worry about forked files or dealing with TXT filetype of the .sdk file when it arrives on the GS. Basically, having an easy-to-start 8-bit ShrinkIt eliminates the need for GS-ShrinkIt to be self-extracting. SHRINK.EXE is the first time I've encountered the XTRACT utility which, evidently, was used to create an EXEC-able self-extracting version of 8-bit ShrinkIt. Is XTRACT available somewhere on the net?
