The modem cable plugged into the telephone icon port on the IIgs goes to a NULL modem connector which goes to a modem cable connected to the PC COM-1 or COM-2 port. No actual modem is required. The NULL modem connector is just an adaptor or cable which swaps around Transmit and Receive lines plus a few control lines. Each computer running a telecom terminal 'thinks' the other computer is a modem.
