ORCHIS MILITARIS
E: Military Orchid
F: Orchis militaire
G: Helm-Knabenkraut

A group of colorful Orchis militaris plants in a semi-dry lime meadow is a beautiful sight.

This orchid is one of the more common species. It can appear in large groups, especially where bushes and shrubs give a little shadow.

The petals of this species form a pink "helmet". This gives a good contrast to the purple-red lip.

I found this orchid grouped with O. purpurea. Bastards between the two species are possible.

The adult O. militaris has only a moderate mycorrhiza. This makes garden culture possible. Put it in a limestone bed with no full sun exposition.
