Many people think of orchids as colorful tropical plants which are often offered in flower shops. Few people know that orchids are omnipresent and that they can grow even in some of the coldest climates and highest mountains of these world and even fewer people would notice these plants with sometimes tiny blossoms which are nevertheless fascinating.

To the left, orchids of the families Dendrobium, Paphiopedilum, Phalaenopsis and Cattleya are depicted which are already job lot in most flower shops, available in so many bloated hybrids and selections that even the experts are unable to identify their origins.

This stack does not deal with these plants. Neither does it deal with the tropical wild orchids which are available in hundreds and thousands of species in the treetops of tropical rain forests.

This stack deals with the orchids of the colder climates, sometimes small, modest plants which can't be compared with the equatorial species, but fascinating enough anyway. Furthermore, many of them are hardy enough for the garden.
